Evangelion Takes the Kabuki Stage

Evangelion is officially stepping onto the kabuki stage with a new production, “Kabuki Symphony: Evangelion,” premiering on February 23, 2026 at Yokohama Arena as part of the three-day EVANGELION:30+; 30th ANNIVERSARY OF EVANGELION festival.
The show marks the first formal collaboration between the Evangelion franchise and traditional kabuki, co-produced by Khara and Shochiku, and will be staged in the festival’s STAGE AREA alongside the EVA EXTRA 30 exhibition zone.

Cast & Creative Team: Reimagining Eva in Kabuki
Rising kabuki actor Kichitaro Uemura takes on the role of Shinji Ikari, with “prince of kabuki” Sakon Onoe appearing as Kaworu Nagisa, supported by a creative team that blends classical performance with contemporary staging—script and direction by Kazuhisa Tobe, choreography by Kanjuro Fujima, and music by gagaku musician Fumihiko Yamada. Designed as a one-day, festival-style event, the production promises to reinterpret Eva’s themes and visuals through kabuki dance, live traditional orchestra, and large-scale projections in celebration of the series’ 30th anniversary.
